State-of-the-art tools for modular synthesizers, designed and crafted in Italy.
The power of stepped random voltages: create infinite textures with just thee modules
This Week Federico takes us for a tour of one of his favorite techniques: random S&H everywhere!
We will use a single S&H from Sapèl, multiply it through the 333, and patch it to many points of Brenso's complex section. Thanks to its many attenuverters, it will be possible to create a drone sound that will change its timber infinite times at every clock strike.

Wow, thanks a lot! Hope it'll be worth the wait!
The meter doesn’t work in bypass mode and the compressor engaged is louder, louder isn’t better it’s just louder, I could hear the compression operating way too much on an acoustic guitar
The meter does not work because it displays the attenuation, not the signal's amplitude. With the compressor bypassed, there's no attenuation, so the meter stays off. Thanks for your remark on the sound, if you want to hear a different take on acoustic guitars you may want to check this video by White Sea Studios: ua-cam.com/video/shiN-zoKiAY/v-deo.html
Once again sound nice !
Glad you like it!
The device sounds crisp and the controls are both subtle and effective. Maybe you should publish frequency response, noise and THD specs on your website. You guys can definitely make a novel series of 500-format devices. Most studio boxes haven't evolved in ages. Taking inspiration from your experience with modular synth design can certainly open new avenues in the studio mixing domain. I can imagine multi-band compression, but also resonant EQs. One thing that is missing in the EQ realm is pitch-tracking EQ. In general pitch-tracking is a major component of all modular synths (1V/oct) but it's nowhere to be seen in audio sweetening. It would make sense to have a pitch-tracking compressor, for instance. While the tracking can be wide-range on a low-pass-filtered extract of the feed signal, the effect doesn't have to track the tracking 1:1 ; that's the beauty of it - you can dial the tracking such that the parameters of the device (compressor, eq, delay, etc) change only as much as you need them too. I know talk is cheap and there's a cost and effort to designing, testing, building and marketing these devices, but the current offers on the 500-format are notoriously lacklustre and it shouldn't be difficult to stand above the rest, as long as the audio specs are studio-grade.
When I say "pitch tracking" I mean, you'd have to experiment with both "frequency tracking" and "pitch tracking". It's the same issue encountered by octave divider pedals and other types of vocoders. You guys are evidently experts in vocoders. The problem being your current vocoder is way too complex for audio engineering needs.
Thanks a lot for the detailed comment! Most of your suggestions are really intriguing even if it's hard to draw the line between studio engineering and sound design tools. With the 2806, our goal was to create a device that could make a sound better without overtaking its nature. Most of the effects you suggest suit a more "aggressive" approach where you may want to deliberately twist and process a sound - not a bad thing at all, but at the moment it's a bit on a different path than the one we're currently on and would require more thought!
Damn son
N I C E ! Podcast! 321 & Sapel in the rack NYC!
I think the Analogue Solutions Generator is exactly what Tim is looking for.
I assume that someone somewhere has created midi files of the Slonimsky material. Any idea where I might find something like that? Thanks!
once again nice !
Thanks again! ❤️
Extremely clean and effective. You guys should do a whole range of mix-oriented devices and you should consider also offering them in the 500 format - as it is common in studios - as well as 19" rackmount devices.
Thank you so much! Yes, the 19" format is indeed something that we'd like to think about in the future. We'll see!
Holy cow those bass tones are amazing. Brenso I’m guessing?
Yeah! Brenso's complex output straight into the CGM with a pinch of the mixer's internal soft clip!
That's exactly my set of Frap modules. Crazy to see them all in one row.
Wow, awesome! Yeah it's a bit of a funny arrangement we made, but it turns out to be quite interesting to have them laid back like so.
i have a question: why at minute 12:52 the mixed output is used? shoudnt it work with the left output cause no output of the vcas are used? why it works with the right output, which i though only mixes the vcas who are patched at their own output?
ah ok got it: from the manual: ". If all the section outputs are un- patched the two mix the outputs will sound the same" , i get it.
That's right! The left output becomes "different" only when the output of at least one section is patched somewhere
The goal for my Eurorack system is to be open ended with few modules that can only serve one purpose. For this reason I want all my VCA modules to have some functionality besides being VCA's, but I had a hard time finding very compact modules that fit this requirement. When I saw this module I instantly knew it was what I had been searching for.
Thank you so much! We love this approach: it highlights the difference between function and application! Hope it'll be up to the task!
Will be added to my Frap Tools rack soon along with Bagài :) Great video as always, please keep them coming!
Thank you so much, hope they'll be worth the wait!
Awesome sounds ☺♥♪
Thank you! ❤️
Are you making sure that we only hear the audio from the software and not the room mic that you are using for vocals?
There was no room mic, only two lavaliers that are muted when the track is playing back.
My guess is (as it wasn't addressed directly) one of 2 reasons we are hearing that tail (mentioned but not really explained): either it's part of the Kick Sample, or if it was a mic'd kick drum, it could have been a very live room, or very small/ reflective... compression would definitely bring out this tail and make it more apparent. Nice sounding unit guys!! 👊🏼
It was indeed a recorded track of a rock band (the link to the actual song is in the description), good ear! You can clearly hear how different each stroke is. I don't know in detail in which room it was recorded, but the tail/reflection was part of the track and may suit the style of a classic rock sound :) Thanks for the kind words!
@@FrapTools Thanks for clarifying. I have stopped using Spotify totally though. :)
Nice !
Thank you!

I enjoy all your videos, but this was fantastic. I would love more lessons on complex rhythmic structure.
Thank you so much! We'll try to think about other videos!
A particularly good one. I loved going back to the Greeks for some serious grounding.
Thank you so much Chris! Yeah framing the words we use is always a nice practice to do when trying to understand what we're talking about.
Great tutorial

Glad you enjoyed it, and don't miss the other interviews!
Polyrhythms for days.
Second that, it can go on forever
Very interesting interview, in particular the section on influences. I also listened to some of Isabella's other YT performances, sounded great, most inspiring. BTW, shame you didn't discuss Isabella's performance/composition technique. She talked about short pieces, and I see that in her live performance (videos), she indeed segues into different sections (compositions?). I'd be curious to know how she works live, especially as she mentioned Yuko Araki and short pieces. Thanks for the tip, on Basak Günak (Ah! Cosmos).
Thanks for your remarks! Yes, there could have been soooo much more to talk about, but it was already the longest interview we shot... Maybe we can do another one!
@@FrapTools Please do, it's worth it. BTW, you mention your album, maybe you can give us some details (on Discord, or here?).
Absolutely, feel free to ask on Discord!
Great interview. Loved both your perspectives on short pieces of music.
Glad you enjoyed it, Xavier!
